Congregation Or Chadash participates in Montgomery County’s Adopt-A-Road program. We’ve adopted Kings Valley Road, the road on which our building is located.
Each month, the children of one religious school class, along with their parents, pick up litter along the road. We enjoy seeing the horses on the farm down the street and have often been thanked by neighbors as we don our orange vests and clean up the trash.

Congregation Or Chadash first particpated in the Damascus Relay for Life in 2008. For the past few years, our team has raised over $5000 to help fight cancer. Let’s do it again this year!
What is Relay for Life?
Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. In honor of those who battle cancer 24 hours a day, team members typically take turns walking the track throughout the day and night. For those not walking, there is around-the-clock action to keep everyone busy. From entertainment, food, and games, to touching ceremonies and stories of inspiration, there is something for everyone at Relay for Life. It’s an event like no other.
How can I help?
- Join the team
- Go to Or Chadash’s team page and click on “Join Our Team”.
- A personal webpage will be created for you. You can then email friends and family to ask for donations.
- Each team member is expected to particpate in fundraising and should expect to raise or donate at least $100.
- Purchase a Luminaria
This year again, we will hold a Luminaria Shabbat on Friday, March 9, 2012, where we set up the luminaria in the sanctuary. Luminaria order forms are due by Sunday, March 4, 2012.
- Plan a fundraiser
Plan a bake sale, put together a basket to raffle off, solicit donations from local business, set up a dining night out fundraiser. Whatever your idea is, contact Lisa Yaw for help getting started.
- Make a donation
Even if you don’t join the team, you can make a donation. Just go to Or Chadash’s team page where you can donate online, or print a form and send in a check.
- Come out to the event in May
Relay day is really fun…and sad…and touching. Even if you haven’t signed up to be on the team, you can still show up to support us! Walk a few laps, hang around, be a part of it and see what it’s all about! There’s entertainment, food, and activities–you won’t be bored.

Damascus HELP food pantry provides assistance to needy persons and families in the upper portion of Montgomery County, MD and adjacent areas in the form of emergency food, holiday food baskets and gifts, transportation, furniture and emergency financial assistance.
Congregation Or Chadash collects food on the last Sunday of each month, as well as on Yom Kippur, to give to Damascus HELP.
